Schiit’s Magni line, up until recently, was quite complicated, with multiple models. To see how it stacks up, check out our list of the best headphone amps.Ī brief bit of history. In this review, we break down the Magni 3’s sound, design, packaging and accessories, specs and more. Now, Schiit have released the third version of the Magni, which we recently spent a month with. Their Magni amp/ Modi DAC combo has long been a fan favourite, selling by the truckload and getting new listeners addicted to audio gear. For many, the first stop in upgrading their headphones sound is a little outfit out of Valencia, California: Schiit Audio, pronounced exactly like you think it is. I don't know what the long term fix for the muting would be, you'll have to either manually reselect the DAC as the audio output whenever it wakes back up or keep doing what you've been doing and unplug/replug the USB cable. It’s almost a right of passage for anybody looking to get into the world of audio. Then when Windows wakes back up, even though Windows can see the DAC, there's some transfer of data that's not happening and the DAC either isn't waking up or Windows isn't sending the data to the right place even though it thinks it is. For whatever reason, when Windows goes to sleep it's either unmounting or the DAC recognizes it's no longer getting data so it'll do a sort of soft-shutdown to conserve power. I think it's how Windows recognizes and mounts USB devices. Sometimes a mismatch in the sampling rate can mess up the audio.įor the "muting" problem, I don't think it's muting. If it doesn't, then I would take a look at the audio settings on Windows 10, specifically looking at the audio sampling rate settings (probably set to something like 16-bit/44100Hz), changing it, and see if the crackling goes away. I would test the DAC on another digital audio source like your phone or MP3 player and see if the crackling exists on that source. This makes me think the issue would be with your computer and not with the DAC. If I read correctly, the crackling is happening on your computer but not on your laptop. I am trying to see if there are any other solutions other than endlessly sending my DAC in for repair. They want me to send the DAC in again, but I feel like it will be no different this time. I have also had the DAC replaced by schiit and the problem persisted. The muting problem shows up when I connect the DAC to my laptop but the crackling problem does not seem to be present. I have tried every single thing on schiit's website to no avail: Strangely, it doesn't seem to happen on my browser, but it shows up on Spotify, windows Groove Player and when I play the windows test tone. As soon as I hit unmute, the sound would stop.īut even when the sound is working, there is a crackling and popping when certain audio is playing. Sometimes, even stranger things would happen where audio would only play if my audio settings were set to mute. This problem was only solved by either unplugging plugging back in or disabling and re-enabling the audio device in the audio settings. The same thing would happen if I hit the mute button then unmuted. Windows recognized that there was being sound played but nothing came through. Often times when my computer woke from sleep there would be no sound output no matter what I did. When I upgraded to a Modi 3+/Heresy stack from my Magni/Modi 2U stack, I started having problems.
